ALASKAN CABIN ADVENTURE
![]() If you are looking for a truly authentic Alaskan experience that includes a visit to your pilot's own rustic cabin on the shore of a remote lake, glacier flightseeing by floatplane, wildlife watching, and enjoying it all with your own private guide, this is the adventure you want! |
| Chilkat lake
remains one of southeast Alaska's roadless and hidden gems, accessible primarily by floatplane. |
Let Butch share a slice of authentic Alaskan living with you.
Butch will take you flightseeing and glacier viewing along spectacular Lynn Canal. Upon reaching the mouth of the Chilkat River, Butch will trace the start of the historic Dalton highway upriver as you soar high above the Chilkat bald eagle preserve to finally touch down at Butch's private cabin on beautiful Chilkat Lake. Ahhh, this is the life... Picture yourself at a cabin perched on the shore of Chilkat Lake, a large and very beautiful lake about 30 miles north of Haines nestled between the northern border of Glacier Bay National Park and the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. As you might imagine, the scenery is nothing short of spectacular with soaring mountains, waterfalls, and hanging glaciers all reflecting into the lake’s sparkling clear waters. However, with no road access to any part of the lake, Chilkat remains a hidden gem accessible primarily by floatplane. This amazingly pristine and peaceful haven is home to abundant wildlife. From the south facing, 36 ‘ long deck of our cabin we regularly see brown bears, moose, mountain goats, swans, eagles, and loons. In addition to the freshwater trout and dolly varden that are always abundant, Chilkat Lake also has a large run of sockeye salmon that can be seen spawning along the shoreline in mid-summer as well as a fall run of silver salmon. This is the perfect place to experience the Alaska of your dreams. A light smack will be served on the deck while you take an hour to relax, enjoy the view, and search for wildlife. Finally, you'll be off for the equally scenic flight back to Juneau concluding with a flight down the Mendenhall Glacier (weather permitting.) |

While
the cabin itself is very nice and comfortable
we stress that it is genuinely rustic. The bathroom is an outhouse; drinking water is hauled from a nearby natural spring; a wood stove heats the cabin; and the only electricity comes from a limited 12-volt solar system that runs just a few lights and the sirius radio. An old-fashioned hand pump and enamel basin passes for the kitchen “sink”, although the kitchen area does possess a propane refrigerator and stove. Happily, we think, there is no internet or cell phone service but we do keep a satellite phone for emergencies. |
Even when no wildlife are present, the views from our lakeside cabin make the trip worthwhile!
![]() Ultimately our aim here is not to recreate
all of the modern conveniences
of suburbia in the wilderness but to provide the adventuresome traveler something better: a true Alaskan cabin experience. |
